fitness apps; the 30 clean

Our bodies were made to move. To walk, to jump, to crawl, to get up and down in a moment’s notice, to reach, to run, to dance, and the list goes on.  As technology has advanced, our bodies have decayed. From computers, to T.V., to video games and cars – we have gone from a culture that moves to one that sits on our bottoms for 9+ hours a day!

Gone are the days of hunter and gathers and here are the days of drive-thru and delivery. Movement needs to become a mindful part of our day. As a Health & Lifestyle Coach, I hear the constant excuse as to why my clients can’t make time for physical activity. Whether it is because of work, school or kids, there always seems to be an excuse. That is when I ask, “well, how much time do you spend on social media? Are you on your phone all day? Could you maybe carve out 5 minutes here, and 10 minutes there?”

For my clients that never leave their  iPhones and laptops, I remind them that technology has now made fitness more accessible and even available in the palm of your hand. Fitness apps and streaming videos make it easier than ever to combat the “busy excuse.” Plus, they bring a personal aspect to something that can other wise be impersonal.

Here are a few online tools to help you add exercise into your life, avoid injury and play like a kid at any age! Whether you have five or twenty-five minutes or enjoy group to individual activities there is an app for you.

Fitness and Health Apps

Now a days there is an app for everything, even fitness. Track your workouts, count your steps, or even get set up with a virtual personal trainer and nutritionist. My favorite apps actually create custom workouts for you. In fact, they actually give you the option of working out in a gym, at home or anywhere outside. You can design your workouts based on the time you have, the equipment you have and your desired intensity level. When I don’t have time to get to the gym, but want to be outside and do a quick workout, a fitness app comes in handy. With the touch of a button I can get a 10 minute HIIT workout, proving there is always time to get some movement into your day.

Your Online Gym:

Apps like ClassPass and Lymber (a San Deigo local company)– allow you to belong to a variety of fitness studios in your area without having to pay all of the monthly premiums. The ClassPass app requires a monthly membership, while Lymber uses a dynamic pricing algorithm allowing you to book at class at your favorite studio and then pay the going rate for that time slot and teacher! In my opinion a win-win!

These work great for people who really enjoy a lot of different modalities. Cycle, yoga, barre, aerial yoga, Crossfit and kettle bell are just a few of the types of classes you can find.

Streaming/On-demand

Perfect for the person who loves to workout at home. For the person who doesn’t have time to get to a gym before or after work, but believes a good workout is important. Streaming videos take out the extra step of a DVD. Most are monthly memberships, but the best part is you can usually find a deal for a 1-week trial period. When I asked our 30 Clean Members what they prefered when it came to a workout, most favored live workouts with their favorite trainers at a studio or gym. But for those who with busy schedules, On-Demand Classes can make a world of difference between getting your workout in or not! Apps on the other hand, were rated high for our competitive peeps, who just like to keep track of all of their stats so they can keep pushing themselves day after day!
